The Raven and the Dove - OR Why Noah sent a raven out first.
Genesis 8: 7 -12 (we won't break it down here, you can read it):
RAVEN (STRONGS 6158) - from 6150 primative root - Awrab - through the idea of covering with a texture. To barter, give as a kind of surety, exchange, technically to traffic (as if to barter), give as a pledge - i.e. to expose it to most imminent danger.
DOVE (STRONGS 3123) - Yownah - 3196 is similar/same - in Greek it is MALLON - it denotes increase, a greater quantity, a larger measure, a higher degree, more and more fully.
NOAH (STRONGS 5146) - Same as 5118 - Resting Place.

Noah sent the raven out first. It flew and flew and never returned. It did not die, but found ground when the water receded. He sent the dove out three (3) times. Twice it returned at evening time (once with an olive branch in its beak), the third time, it did not return at all.
NOAH had to send the raven out first. It represented sacrifice (a pledge given in exchange for something is a sacrifice). In this case sacrifice for a safe passage for Noah. It was NOT meant to return. Your sacrifices must not return. They are given to God of a clean and willing heart and not meant to be returned. That is the nature of sacrifice. Also, a sacrifice comes before any return from God. He rewards your sacrifice of faith, time, money. He returns it to you, though you sacrifice with no expectation of return. Notice the Raven is an unclean bird. It did not die. It was NOT a sin sacrifice. It was a gift given in exchange for Noah's life. By it's very nature the raven HAD to go first. Literally a pledge/sacrifice has no resting place...no reason to return to NOAH (Resting place).
The Dove, however....denotes increase. It denotes God's blessings..God's blessings dwell in rest. Noah's name means resting place. The dove HAD to come back. God is rest wherein he calls the weary to rest and his increase is found in resting in and upon HIM. Noah sent the RAVEN once, the DOVE three times....why? Because a sacrifice only needs be made ONCE to be effective, but GOD'S INCREASE KEEPS ON COMING!
Increase always returns and rewards the day's efforts. We get paid on Friday (generally) AFTER our work has been done satisfactorily, the phrase "at the end of the day" or "when it is all said and done" means exactly that: We will have our reward at the evening time! The dove returned in the evening time. AND< it did not return void, it came bearing a gift...increase....of the Olive branch, proof that God had truly blessed Noah and provided dry land. So, increase follows sacrifice and always accompanies the resting place.
